How to Look for a Job

Written by Steven Kapteyn, Employment Counsellor

1. Network

The first way is to use your network of family, friends, and different social communities you are a part of. This method of job search is one of the most important. You can also use networks in faith communities, teams, and ethno-cultural associations. Think broadly about groups you and your network are a part of. You can tap into networks with your parent’s friends and your friend’s parents, any connections you have. Ask these network members if they know people who work in an industry you want employment in.

Ask the connection if the company is hiring, what the hiring process is, and if they can connect you to their manager. If the person is able to connect you via email, phone or in person, remember that you still have to prove to the person hiring that you are the right person for the job. Research that company and be prepared to answer any questions.

Don’t be embarrassed by using your network. Lots of companies like to take recommendations from employees.

2. Going in Person or Cold Call

The second way to look for a job, is to go in person or phone the company you are interested in. Believe it or not, there are companies that would prefer you to apply in person. Smaller businesses do not always have the time or money to post jobs online. Some employers want to meet you, to see how you present yourself.

Before you visit a business or phone, do a little bit of research on the company, and be prepared for an on the spot job interview. Make sure you ask to talk to the hiring manager. If the manager is not there, ask when they will be back and follow-up at that time.

3. Online

The third job search method is to look online at different job boards and on the direct websites of the companies you are interested in. Some employers do not post their job opportunities on job boards, or the postings may be out of date. If you are looking for a job on a site like Kijiji, make sure to search the businesses online. You want to make sure the company is legitimate.

If a job ad makes lots of promises about how much money you can make, be cautious. The job is likely too good to be true. Also, candidates should not have to pay a lot of money to get started. It is important to always look on a company’s website when you search online.

Follow-up

With these three methods you want to make sure you follow up with the employers you have applied to. You can do this by going in person, call or emailing the company or hiring manger to follow up on the application. This could be as easy as ‘I would like to follow up on my application and see if you had any questions for me.’ It is important to follow up to show that you are interested in the job.
