You’ve heard about a hiring event; now what? Are you prepared?

How do you prepare to attend a hiring fair?

Potential employers are watching you. They want to learn about you and what skills you have that match their organization. Your presentation is important; smile and introduce yourself as you approach a booth and be prepared to talk about yourself and how you fit with that company.

RESEARCH BEFORE GOING TO EVENT - This is a very important step that often gets neglected.

Why do you research?

o It helps to get informed what companies will be there and what jobs are offered

o Depending on the size of the event pick the top employers you would like to connect with and research their organization so you are prepared to answer or ask questions

o Have targeted resumes for those employers

o If you are given the opportunity for an interview on the spot – having done the research you are ready and can answer the typical question - Why do you want to work here or what do you know about our company?)

o Have other resumes that target industry and then go to see the other employers that are at the event.

o Doing the research ahead of time can also help you to relax

o Knowing some information about companies also helps you to have some question to ask the potential employer.

o Employers are impressed when you can ask questions about their business as it shows you have taken some initiative, you have taken the time to prepare and are motivated to work.

o Take notes of employers you talk to, try to get a business care – write down the names of the person you spoke with and thank them for their time

o For any interviews you do get write down any questions that you did not expect and even those you did expect (helps for similar companies and future interviews)

o Thank employers for their time and if interested you can ask if you can follow up with them.

POST HIRING EVENT – The importance of following up and taking next steps.

o As soon as you leave the event make notes of anything that stood out for you – possible employers who said they will have seasonal positions later – then follow up with those companies. Mention that you talked to them at the hiring event.

o Make sure you follow steps suggested – if you were told to apply on line or by email; do that and note that you were at the event and following up as requested.

o Remember whenever you send an email always include a note as to why you are connecting. Don’t assume because you are attaching your resume they will know you are looking for work. You want to stand out and mention in the body of the email you were at the event and connecting as recommended.

o Always thank them for their time

o Don’t stop looking, continue looking as you never know when the right job will come along for you. Pay attention to hiring fairs, postings that are on social media and if you really want to work for a certain company then follow their website.
